Research

Our collections include the Archives of the former Township of the Rear of Leeds and Lansdowne, the former Township of Escott, and the Leeds & 1000 Islands Historical Society (representing the former Township of the Front of Leeds and Lansdowne).

The Archives can be used for local history and genealogy research, as well as research for historical tours and more! Our collections include a wide variety of fascinating materials about our community—letters, diaries, municipal documents, maps, drawings, postcards, and photographs.

Research Tips
It's a good idea to do some background research first before coming into the Archives. If you have a plan, or an idea of what you are looking for, the better we can assist you! Use our online catalogue to determine if we might have something related to your research.

Some tips to keep in mind:
  • All researchers must sign a researcher registration form and agree to the regulations for use of the Research Area
  • Archival records may not be borrowed, and the public has access to the public research area only.
  • Some materials may not be available because of preservation, donor or legislative restrictions.
  • No smoking, eating, or drinking in the Archives is permitted.
  • Genealogical research resources are available through the Archives and the Library.

For a complex or detailed research request, it is recommended that you come into the archives to perform this research, or hire the services of a professional researcher. The Leeds & 1000 Islands Historical Society provides research services for the fee of $10.00 per hour: further information can be found on their website.
