  • Collection

2019-003 Matron Bertha Willoughby Photo collection.
Bertha Jane Willoughby (BJW. 1875 – 1956) was born at Gananoque and raised near Ellisville where her father was a cheesemaker at Cold Glen Factory. She went to KGH School of Nursing in 1905. She graduated in 1908 and became the Superintendent of Nurses from 1908 until 1912, when she transferred to the Protestant Hospital in Smith’s Falls. She enlisted for war service in 1914 and was stationed with No. 2 Canadian Stationary Hospital in Le Toquet, France. She was redeployed to Alexandria Egypt in 1915, thence to La Traport, France in 1916, and Etaples, France, the same year. She returned to Canada in 1918.
The photos were loaned for scanning in 2014 and numbered as they occurred in the albums, without sorting. In 2019, when the originals were donated, they were sorted into files according to location, the oversees photos being the biggest part, and local and family photos separated. For this reason the numbers of the photos are intermingled among the files.

File 2014-038-A Photo album made from a Fleur de Lys Private Greeting Card sales album, 7 cm thick, with black construction paper pages alternating with the descriptive pages for the original greeting cards, several of which are still in place. It contains 200 black and white photos and post cards from her travels to France and Egypt during the First World War. Most are unidentified, but some have pencil writing in the black pages telling the location or people’s names, and there are a few sticky notes inserted to identify “BJW” in groups.. It includes a series of professional prints showing the damage to a hospital in Egypt that was bombed. Included are 7 photo pages of loose photos from the album, including a group in which Matron Willoughby is seated second from The Prince of Wales (Geo.VI), and a watercolour painting of a city with waterfront promenade. There are a small number of prints from around her home, which should go in File 2014-038-B, but couldn’t be removed without damage.

File 2014-038-B Local & Family Photos includes a 2-page biography, and copies of her attestation papers;
